Fred Metzner

Fred Metzner was the first postmaster and one of the first mayors, merchants and residents of the area that would become Nowata.

Metzner was born in Germany in 1855.

He established a general merchandise store and post office on California Creek near Delaware in a community named Metz, but later moved to Nowata, where he was appointed postmaster in November 1889.

In December 1897, Metzner was elected Mayor of Nowata.

During his time in Nowata, Metzner also ran a city billiard hall.

He passed away at his home in Nowata in 1911 at the age of 57 and was laid to rest in Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery.
