Nowata History 1920: New Rex Theatre OpensThe new Rex theatre that has been under construction for several months, was completed this week and is beyond a doubt the best playhouse in the state. Geo. E. Shilkett, who has made Nowata his home for the past eight years, is financing this big work of art, which is one of the biggest assets a city can have. He has spared neither time nor money in making it the best that could be made. Shilkett is a real showman of experience, and is a man among men, and numbers his friends by the score, and will give the people of Nowata and this community something that they can be justly proud of. The seating capacity of this big show house will be 750; is steam heated; has six large boxes for those who care, and is brilliantly lighted by electric lights. The interior decorations are the most beautiful we have ever seen -- the ceiling is of a blue, clouded tint, the upper sidewalls of oatmeal brown, and the bottom walls are of red. A beautiful scene, just about the orchestra pit, is a lady sitting on a large sea shell, with angels on either side, the sea shell being draped in beautiful pink roses, and is an elegant piece of work which was done by Bob Ralston, of Oklahoma City. The stage decorations and curtains are a work of art, and were painted by Ralston & Ford, of Oklahoma City. The construction work was done by J.B. Crouch, of Nowata, and is a beautiful piece of work. Shilkett is giving Nowata a play house of which they can boast, and will, no doubt, be liberally patronized by show lovers from far and near. The opening play is entitled "Scandal" which will appear at the new Rex next Monday evening. Published in the Delaware News on Thursday, February 26, 1920, page 5. |
